Scariest Places in the World

Considering that Halloween is just around the corner, I decided to do a special edition post. So I sat down and searched for “haunted” and scary places around the world. Reading about these urban legends was pretty awesome, and I selected a few famous ones. So here they are:

in Europe:

 Bran castle, Transylvania, Romania

The renown home of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Located at the corner of the Carpathian mountains, it is one of the most visited places in the country. A lot of people want to see the place where the infamous Dracula supposedly made his acts of torture, and the Romanians know just how to take advantage of this historic building. Besides the castle, there are a lot of restaurants and souvenir shops for incoming tourists, and if you’re lucky enough, you might just get to meet Dracula in the flesh :D.

 Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle is the most visited attraction in all of  Scotland (with over 1.3 million visitors last year, according to Wikipedia). Built on volcanic Castle Rock, during its 800 years of history has overcome many battles, sicknesses (it is said that victims of the plague were entombed here), and also hosts dungeons where some nasty acts of torture have been documented, therefor it’s believed to be haunted and is considered one of the scariest places in Europe.

With a history of over a millennium, it is a unique castle, being built within a cave (to make access to it more difficult), and also has a hidden passageway leading to Postojna caves. In 2008, it has been investigated for paranormal activity and is considered haunted after at least 700 years of violent history.

in Africa:

Port Elizabeth Public Library, South Africa

One of the most beautiful buildings in South Africa, known to be haunted by a caretaker who has devoted 31 years of his life to the library. Since he dies, library doors are being open and suddenly shot for apparently no reason, and books suddenly fall from the shelves.

Southern Seas

Legend has it, that in the 17th century, a Dutch ship (called The Flying Dutchman)  has sunk in the Southern Seas of Africa. Since then, it haunts the sea, searching for other ships in order to send their message home.

in Asia:

Formerly known as the Royal Air Force Hospital, it was closed down in 1997 and believed to be haunted ever since. People say that the morgue is not the best place to be after sundown, because the headless/feet-less ghosts tend to “hold meetings” there.

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India

This place is considered to be cursed by a black magic sorcerer. It is said that the residents of Bhangarh would die of unnatural deaths, to their spirits would stay for centuries to haunt the ruins of the fort. It is said that the houses near the fort have no roofs, because every time they tried to build a rooftop, the whole house collapses.

Tuen Mun Road, Hong Kong

It was interesting reading not only about haunted buildings, hospitals, prisons and castles, but roads as well. Tuen Mun Road, considered one of the most dangerous roads in Asia, is believed to be haunted by the souls of those who died in car accidents there. It is said that ghosts appear suddenly from nowhere, causing drivers to swerve the car, causing fatal accidents.

in America:

the Bermuda Triangle

First mentioned by Columbus in the late 15th century, when he wrote about mysterious light patterns in the sky, as well as a weird compass readings, when he was approaching the Caribbean. Since then, there have been countless reports about ships and planes disappearing in the area.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Louisville, Kentucky

The building housed hundreds of tuberculosis patients, and because of the big number of deaths occurred in this place, rumor has it that there has been an incredible amount of paranormal activity observed here. Although it’s been closed for quite a while, I heard that there are organised tours here, so you can check it out if you’d like.

Alcatraz Island Prison, San Francisco, California

One of the most feared prisons in the world, Alcatraz is known for its severe punishments, harsh discipline, and solid architecture, making an escape almost impossible. Although it’s been shut down in the early 1960’s, but it’s grim legacy lives on.

in Australia:

Monte Cristo, New South Wales

Although the mansion looks pretty friendly, the legend says that when the owner died, his wife locked herself up in the house and didn’t come out for 23 years. She died in here, and is said to haunt the house, still weeping and crying.

Have you been to any of these (supposedly) haunted places?
