Vintgar Gorge: The Turquoise Jewel of Slovenia

Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

By now you guys probably know that I absolutely love hiking. What you might not know yet is that my favorite type of hiking trails are the ones which cross natural gorges. Narrow passages, steep cliffs and and occasional splashes of water are very welcome, especially on a hot day with extreme temperatures.

Even though the cloud was cloudy that morning, when the opportunity presented itself to cross Vintgar Gorge, we just couldn’t say no. Luckily, the weather did not worsen and we got to experience this amazing karst formation firsthand without any rain. If you’re in the area during the tourist season, I highly recommend paying a visit to Vintgar Gorge. Here’s everything you need to know:

Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6 kilometer-long picturesque gorge shaped by the Radovna River. It lies 4 kilometers north-west of Lake Bled between the Hom vertical rocks and the Borst Hills. The well-maintained nature trail is made up of wooden decks and bridges. You can’t actually get lost, because there is only one way to get around.

To avoid the crowds, make sure you get to the gorge early in the morning. From what I understood it can get quite packed during peak hours, which is due to Vintgar Gorge’s recent popularity. Cloudy days are also ideal for a short visit, when there are less tourists around. When we were there, we could comfortably explore the gorge. But seeing as how the nature trails are quite narrow, I can imagine how the herds of people can easily ruin your visit to Vintgar Gorge.

The trail is relatively easy and does not contain any difficult sections, thus being open to everyone from small children to seniors. It’s basically a 2-3 hour walk from one end to another and then back. Small kids should be supervised by their parents at all times to avoid any accidents because of the gappy railings.

Don’t be surprised if you feel a few water drops fall on your head every now and then – it’s completely natural. Just put on a hoodie and keep on walking!

Nestled among the rapid waves of the Radovna River you will encounter two man-made sights. Still standing strong 33 meters above the gorge is the mighty stone bridge built in 1906, used by the Bohinj Railway. You can also observe the small dam redirecting water to the hydroelectric plant below the Sum waterfall.

Towards the end of the trail you’ll be rewarded with the view of the rapid and powerful Sum waterfall. I highly recommend crossing the river to see the waterfall from the other side. After you’ve admired the mighty Sum, take some time for yourself, sit down on a bench, enjoy a sandwich and just marvel at the amazing wonder of nature in front of you. Head back on the way you came and see the gorge from a different perspective on your way towards the parking lot.

  • This is one of my favorite spots for a day trip from Ljubljana! Your pictures of the Gorge are gorgeous and paint a very realistic picture of it.

    • Hello, Juli!
What I truly love about Slovenia are the excellent roads and the short distances between attractions, making it possible to visit Vintgar from Ljubljana even in merely a day! Thanks so much for your kind words, we were really trying to capture the essence of what the gorge is like in real life and not oversaturate the colors or overexpose the waterfalls 🙂
